Because the Day of Pentecost brought to a close the great Fifty Days of Easter, we now find ourselves in a long stretch of the liturgical year that holds no regularly occurring festivals.  With nearly half of the liturgical year defined by the Nativity season and the Resurrection season, we proceed into the second half of the year which is comprised of the season that is called Time after Pentecost. We might, practically, call this time “the green Sundays,” because the color of the paraments and vestments is green.  This color signifies the life and growth of the church in the power of the Holy Spirit.  During the Time after Pentecost, the Sunday readings draw out the significance of God’s mission in Jesus Christ for the sake of the world.  And, we hear again Jesus’ prayer for, and charge to, the church: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you” (John 20:21).  Additionally, the Sunday liturgy is more simplified, as we reserve some elements for other seasons of the church year.
